Graham's Grand Slam, Part 1

The Whitecaps played their second double header of the season today against the Hyannis Mets. Brewster came into the day winning their last two games, while Hyannis had lost their last six.

The teams split a pair of one run games. The Whitecaps came away with a win in Game 1, beating the Mets 4-3 after four runs in their last at-bat (the 6th inning). Hyannis bounced back to win the second game 3-2 in two extra innings.

One of the stories of the day was the performance of Brewster third basemen/catcher Zach Jones. Prior to today's games, Jones had two hits in his last 35 plate appearances. Jones went 2-3 with a couple singles.

Jones is starting to heat up at the right time. He has registered a hit in the past two days for the first time this season. With the roster depleted from injuries and contract signings (like Nathan Baker's with the Pittsburgh Pirates), the Whitecaps need him to keep it up!

Brewster returns to action tomorrow (Monday, July 27) at 5 pm as they host the Cotuit Kettleers in game four of a five game homestand. Tune in at 4:45 for the pregame show with Nick, Craig, and me!

A Fun Day... a Better Weekend? Nick's Knocks, Part 2

For this edition of Nick's Knocks, I don't really have a knock on anyone or anything, but I do have my All Star Game Photo Album from yesterday's game at Fenway Park. Although the game was shortened to 5 innings because of the rain, the players still seemed to enjoy the experience (see: Kyle Blair and Colin Walsh photo).

Let us know what you think of the photos. Feel free to comment right on them if you want. There are shots of batting and fielding practice, the Home Run Hitting Contest and the autograph session.

The Whitecaps are off to Doran Park in Bourne today for a doubleheader versus the Braves. They'll have another game tomorrow (at home), then another doubleheader on Sunday. By the end of the weekend, we'll have a much better view of where the Whitecaps stand in the playoff picture. The weekend wraps up an entire week of games against the West. Starting Monday, all but two of the Whitecaps games will be against East teams.

New Features to the Blog

We're adding even more to our coverage of the team through the blog this week. Starting tomorrow, we'll have a specialized entry from one of our broadcasters almost every day.

Check out Nick's Knocks (which started a couple days ago) for jokes and updates on former Whitecaps.

Graham's Grand Slam is a biweekly update with four interesting points about the team or a player or coach.

Craig's Count is a collection of fun facts and news about the team.

We also added a list of blogs you might be interested in. There are a few Cape League ones, the most popular baseball blogs from ESPN, and the blog of our Broadcast Manager Nick Gagalis.

We'll still have plenty of other entries on the blog too, so check back regularly during the season!

Nick's Knocks, Part 1

For the first edition of the new feature, "Nick's Knocks," I figured I would start out with a knock on myself.

I made an interesting mistake on the broadcast during the doubleheader against Falmouth. During the second game of the doubleheader, I noticed a large bird flying beyond center field. I confused the term, "commodore" with "condor," suggesting that the bird might be a good omen for the team, since (I thought) that was what a commodore was. It was a pretty boneheaded move on my part, but at least it gave Graham and Craig a few laughs. Hopefully it made you smile too.

Now I understand that a commodore is a naval admiral, and that it doesn't eat mice.

We're Going Streaking!

The Whitecaps have won four in a row after tonight's victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Sitting right next to the dugout, we could feel the excitement. Graham and I recorded our broadcast of the game because there was no wireless internet (which is also why there were no real time tweets).

The Whitecaps struggled through June after a hot start to the season, but the team has really clicked in the last week. The roster is finalized, the offense is alive, and the pitching has been good out of the windup and the stretch, early and late, starters and relievers.

Tant Shepherd got his first 2 RBI as a member of the Whitecaps, and they were the difference in the game. Stayton Thomas came in for his first appearance with the bases loaded and one down, but he struck out the first batter he saw, and forced a ground out to end the inning.

Here's the box score to the game.

The Whitecaps challenge the Chatham Anglers tomorrow at home. That game was originally scheduled to be played on Monday, June 22, then was rescheduled for Tuesday, June 23. The games were rained out both those days, as were all other Cape League Games. Instead of facing Chatham when they were at their best, they will host the Anglers, who are now losers in seven of their last 10 games.

A Loss with Promise

The Whitecaps had one of their best bullpen performances of the season tonight. They also had one of their better late inning comebacks, but because of a rough start and a few extra baserunners, they ended up losing.

Brewster gave up 7 runs in the first two innings, but Sean Hoelscher, normally a starter, dominated the Firebirds as soon as he came in. He retired 12 of 13 batters at one point in his outing, went five full innings, and didn't allow a hit or a run.

In the 4th inning, the Caps got a pair of runs on four straight singles. Both Lyle Allen and Harold Martinez got RBI singles, but each of them were thrown out at second trying to turn them into doubles. That was the kind of luck the Whitecaps had tonight, but there certainly were some positives.

The 6th inning was one of the best the Whitecaps have had all year offensively. They were only a homer short of hitting for the cycle in the inning, and Jarret Parker got a 3-run triple in his first game with the team. John Barr knocked him in to complete the comeback, but the Whitecaps didn't score the rest of the night.

Now that the rosters have been updated, the Whitecaps have a lot more positional depth. Jarrett Parker's arrival moved the slick-fielding John Barr to left, and Tant Shepherd plays infield and outfield. They just recently added Arizona's catcher, Daniel Butler to their roster as well.

The Whitecaps will be back at home on Saturday to play the Harwich Mariners. If you can't make it to Stony Brook Field, tune in 15 minutes before the game! brewsterwhitecaps.com

Good News, Bad News

Another Whitecaps loss... at home... again. Brewster hasn't won a game at Stony Brook Field yet this year and hasn't won in its last five games, since the 18th against Y-D. At least the ties are giving them points in the standings.

As a team, the Caps are batting under the Mendoza line (.193), which puts them dead last in the league. They should improve with the addition of a few new bats and the current players getting used to them.

Hopefully the new players in town will give the team a boost. Jedd Gyorko immediately showed he can swing the bat in his first at-bat at home, and John Barr has been a stud at the plate so far.

The pitching staff's 3.66 ERA seems pretty good, but there have been some great team pitching performances in the Cape League this season. Six of the ten teams are posting ERA's under 3, with Bourne having an incredible 1.71 (with Eric Cantrell leading the team). Whitecaps pitchers are among the league leaders in strikeouts, and are maintaining better than a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Things can only get better for the Whitecaps. During the first couple weeks of any Cape League season, the players are just getting a feel for the wooden bats and the tough competition. Now that the College World Series and Team USA tryouts are over, almost all the players are on the Cape or on their way to get started with their respective teams.

No doubt the Brewster club will begin to gel and win some ballgames.

Another Day, Another Postponed Game

The Whitecaps couldn't get an official game in tonight against the Falmouth Commodores. The most likely makeup date for the game is Sunday, July 19th, when there could be a double header (with each game being 7 innings). We'll keep you posted, and in the meantime, you can check out an up-to-date schedule.

The next home game will be Saturday, when the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox make their way down 6A to face the Whitecaps at Stony Brook Field. Come to the park for a great night of baseball, or watch online if you can't make it out!

Weather is a Test of Depth...

The Whitecaps will see just how much depth they have on their roster the next three weeks. Starting tonight (if the game isn't postponed for rain), they'll play games seven nights in a row, and are scheduled to play 18 of the next 19 days.

The Cape League has always been a challenge for players and managers alike on and off the field. Many of the squads still awaiting players from the College World Series and Team USA tryouts. We'll see how well the coaches can manage and the players can play day in and day out. The role of the benches and bullpens will be huge in this stretch of the schedule (as if they weren't important enough already).

If the teams gel well enough, we could see some playoff-level baseball in the first third of the season.

Just Mind Boggling...

Today was originally an off-day for the Whitecaps, but after a couple days of rain, it became a game day. Yesterday's game against the Chatham Anglers was canceled, so they rescheduled it for today. Then that game was canceled, so they had the day off.

The Anglers originally had a game scheduled for today with the Falmouth Commodores, but they canceled it to have the makeup game with the Whitecaps. Because of that, they have a doubleheader against the Commodores later in the year.

Do you have a headache yet just comprehending all that?

Weather, not Opponents a Common Enemy on the Cape

It has rained for many days in a row here on the Cape. Luckily, the Whitecaps haven't had to postpone any of their games yet. However, plenty of other teams have had shortened and rescheduled games because of the weather. We hope that the open days on the schedule stay that way, so the players, coaches, and everyone involved with the team gets a day off.

There will definitely be a video broadcast of tonight's game (if it goes on) by the Hyannis Mets broadcasters, John Cabral and Chris Blake. As long as it's safe to have the equipment outside, the Whitecaps broadcasters (Nick Gagalis, Graham Doty, and Craig Durham) will have the call with an audio broadcast. If you click the "Listen Live" link on the homepage, you'll hear the Brewster broadcasters if they go on. Otherwise, you'll see and hear the Hyannis Mets broadcast.

Remember that you can contact the Whitecaps broadcasters anytime at whitecapsbroadcast@gmail.com. You can also stay updated before, during, and after games by following their Twitter account. They would love to hear from you, whether it's simply a hello, a shout out to a player, an interesting tidbit of information or an answer to one of our trivia questions!
