Good News, Bad News

Another Whitecaps loss... at home... again. Brewster hasn't won a game at Stony Brook Field yet this year and hasn't won in its last five games, since the 18th against Y-D. At least the ties are giving them points in the standings.

As a team, the Caps are batting under the Mendoza line (.193), which puts them dead last in the league. They should improve with the addition of a few new bats and the current players getting used to them.

Hopefully the new players in town will give the team a boost. Jedd Gyorko immediately showed he can swing the bat in his first at-bat at home, and John Barr has been a stud at the plate so far.

The pitching staff's 3.66 ERA seems pretty good, but there have been some great team pitching performances in the Cape League this season. Six of the ten teams are posting ERA's under 3, with Bourne having an incredible 1.71 (with Eric Cantrell leading the team). Whitecaps pitchers are among the league leaders in strikeouts, and are maintaining better than a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Things can only get better for the Whitecaps. During the first couple weeks of any Cape League season, the players are just getting a feel for the wooden bats and the tough competition. Now that the College World Series and Team USA tryouts are over, almost all the players are on the Cape or on their way to get started with their respective teams.

No doubt the Brewster club will begin to gel and win some ballgames.

Another Day, Another Postponed Game

The Whitecaps couldn't get an official game in tonight against the Falmouth Commodores. The most likely makeup date for the game is Sunday, July 19th, when there could be a double header (with each game being 7 innings). We'll keep you posted, and in the meantime, you can check out an up-to-date schedule.

The next home game will be Saturday, when the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox make their way down 6A to face the Whitecaps at Stony Brook Field. Come to the park for a great night of baseball, or watch online if you can't make it out!

Weather is a Test of Depth...

The Whitecaps will see just how much depth they have on their roster the next three weeks. Starting tonight (if the game isn't postponed for rain), they'll play games seven nights in a row, and are scheduled to play 18 of the next 19 days.

The Cape League has always been a challenge for players and managers alike on and off the field. Many of the squads still awaiting players from the College World Series and Team USA tryouts. We'll see how well the coaches can manage and the players can play day in and day out. The role of the benches and bullpens will be huge in this stretch of the schedule (as if they weren't important enough already).

If the teams gel well enough, we could see some playoff-level baseball in the first third of the season.

Just Mind Boggling...

Today was originally an off-day for the Whitecaps, but after a couple days of rain, it became a game day. Yesterday's game against the Chatham Anglers was canceled, so they rescheduled it for today. Then that game was canceled, so they had the day off.

The Anglers originally had a game scheduled for today with the Falmouth Commodores, but they canceled it to have the makeup game with the Whitecaps. Because of that, they have a doubleheader against the Commodores later in the year.

Do you have a headache yet just comprehending all that?

Weather, not Opponents a Common Enemy on the Cape

It has rained for many days in a row here on the Cape. Luckily, the Whitecaps haven't had to postpone any of their games yet. However, plenty of other teams have had shortened and rescheduled games because of the weather. We hope that the open days on the schedule stay that way, so the players, coaches, and everyone involved with the team gets a day off.

There will definitely be a video broadcast of tonight's game (if it goes on) by the Hyannis Mets broadcasters, John Cabral and Chris Blake. As long as it's safe to have the equipment outside, the Whitecaps broadcasters (Nick Gagalis, Graham Doty, and Craig Durham) will have the call with an audio broadcast. If you click the "Listen Live" link on the homepage, you'll hear the Brewster broadcasters if they go on. Otherwise, you'll see and hear the Hyannis Mets broadcast.

Remember that you can contact the Whitecaps broadcasters anytime at whitecapsbroadcast@gmail.com. You can also stay updated before, during, and after games by following their Twitter account. They would love to hear from you, whether it's simply a hello, a shout out to a player, an interesting tidbit of information or an answer to one of our trivia questions!
